ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My work often symbolizes the emotional aspects of human relationships as well as cultural attitudes toward nature and gender. My varied artistic explorations draw from my interpretation of nature and the study of art history, politics, American history, biology, and philosophy.

BACKGROUND

Karen Woodward Sarrow is a painter and digital artist. She won two awards from Pratt Institute in 2003, one for Outstanding Merit in Fine Arts, and one for Academic Achievement. Her contribution to Werner Peiffer's art book 9-11 and the Aftermath is in library collections in the U.S., Germany and Canada. Recently she contributed a digital movie to the exhibit Endless Forms, Engaging Evolution at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a photograph to an on-line exhibit at the Huntington Library, San Marino. She has also participated in shows in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, New York City, and Atlanta.

Karen graduated (MFA) from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in May 2003. Before that she was employed as a Visual Resource Specialist at Emory University in Atlanta. At that time Karen had a studio with the bluemilk group. She received an MA in Art History from The Ohio State University (Columbus, 1994) and a BA in Art from Truman State University (formerly Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, 1991). She is currently exploring digital photography and lives with her husband and children in Los Angeles.
